In
November of 2003, Wyoming Valley Wellness Trails Partnership received
a 5 year Active Living by Design grant from the Robert Wood Johson
Foundation to enhance the environment for active living in the
Wyoming Valley. The grant-funded project, Stepping Forward,
will help us begin to realize a vision of the Valley as a healthy,
active place for all age groups, children to seniors.
The
project includes a number of activities, with strong attention
to our developing regional trail network, which will provide pedestrian
and bicycle friendly pathways that link Valley communities up,
down and across the Susquehanna River.
Active
Living by Design is a national program of The Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation and is part of the UNC School of Public Health in Chapel
Hill , North Carolina . The program will establish and evaluate
innovative approaches to increase physical activity through community
design, public policies and communications strategies.
Communities
throughout the country have been funded through this program to
address barriers to active lifestyles by establishing collaboration
among a variety of organizations and advocacy groups in public
health, recreation, trail creation, land use, and others.
